Kathy Snow Stratton

In painting, I attempt to express the vastness of infinity, to which all things belong.  In this realm, one is unified with all that is. Each painting is about the endless, the infinite, and the ineffable.  As a painter, I seek to understand the essence of the infinite, even though I accept it is an impossibility.

A scaffolding of layered drips and gestural brush strokes create myriad spaces.  My interaction with these combinations allows me to be present in the painting like no other subject.  These works of acrylic paint on linen begin as layers of dripped paint. Upon that structure layers of gestural brush strokes are applied. The result is a painting consisting of thin, translucent layers that interplay. Together, they activate the canvas surface, causing an expanse and infinity that invites contemplation.

Interstices, the spaces between the parts of things, are an important aspect of my paintings.  For me, the emptiness of these spaces is charged with latent energy.  I am not emphasizing mark making, brush strokes and paint drips on the canvas, but the unified field of interstices and essence they create.
